What bazedoxifene is
Bazedoxifene is the active substance of Conbriza. It belongs to the group of selective oestrogen receptor modulators, known in the literature by the abbreviation SERM.
Such substances do not act in the same way in every tissue. In bone they behave similarly to oestrogen, while in the breast and uterus they weaken its influence instead. That selectivity is what separates them from hormone replacement therapy.
Bazedoxifene is used in women after menopause, when bone density falls and the risk of fracture rises. The substance belongs to the third generation of its group and is supplied as 20 mg tablets.
How bazedoxifene works
Receptor binding
The molecule binds to oestrogen receptors in bone tissue and triggers a signal similar in effect to the body's own oestrogen.
Effect on bone
The activity of the cells that break bone tissue down is reduced. Bone loses mineral density more slowly, and this is one of the mechanisms behind fracture protection.
Differences by tissue
In the breast and endometrium the medicine does the opposite and blocks the oestrogen signal. That is why it is not classed as hormone replacement therapy and is not used to relieve hot flushes.
