What lascufloxacin is

Lascufloxacin is a synthetic antibacterial from the fluoroquinolone class. It was developed in Japan, where it is registered for bacterial infections of the respiratory tract. The substance belongs to the later fluoroquinolone generation: it was designed to keep its activity against strains that had already acquired resistance to earlier members of the class.

Fluoroquinolones have been used in medicine since the 1980s. Over that time bacteria developed defence mechanisms, so a new molecule inside the class matters: it gives a physician one more option when standard antibiotics no longer work.

The product is supplied as tablets. It is meant for systemic action: the substance is absorbed in the gut and distributed through the body, so it is used for infections rather than for the skin or mucosa alone.

How lascufloxacin works

The target

The drug acts on two enzymes of the bacterial cell: DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Both keep the circular DNA molecule in the right shape while it is copied and the cell divides.

What happens to the bacterium

Once these enzymes are blocked, the bacterium can no longer copy its DNA and dies. The effect is called bactericidal: the drug does not merely stop growth, it breaks the cell.

Why it matters

Human DNA is built differently from bacterial DNA, so the action is selective. Even so, fluoroquinolones affect a number of processes in the body, which is why they are treated as medicines that need medical supervision.

Activity spectrum

Lascufloxacin acts on Gram-positive cocci, including pneumococcus and staphylococci, and on Gram-negative bacilli such as Escherichia coli and other enterobacteria.

That profile explains why the drug is considered mainly for respiratory infections: it covers the organisms most often involved in infections of the airways.

Approved uses

The manufacturer's prescribing information lists bacterial infections of the respiratory tract. The list of indications and the way the medicine is used are decided by a treating physician after examination, not by a reference page.

Giving an antibiotic without a confirmed bacterial infection makes no sense. Fluoroquinolones do not act on viruses, including those behind the common cold and influenza, so such treatment is useless in a viral infection.

Precautions

Frequently asked

Is lascufloxacin a prescription medicine?

Yes. It is a prescription antibacterial and is not intended for self-medication.

Why does this page not give a dosing schedule?

The regimen depends on the type of infection, the patient's condition and kidney function. That is a physician's decision, not a reference page's.

Where does the order ship from?

Shipping and customs handling are described on the APV Pharmacy delivery page.

Important. This page is reference material and is not medical advice or instruction for use. The product is prescription-only: medical supervision and laboratory monitoring are required. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional.
