What Melsmon is

Melsmon is a Japanese medicine obtained from human placenta. The raw material is purified and hydrolysed: large proteins are split into short fragments, so the solution contains peptides, free amino acids and other low-molecular compounds.

The medicine comes in 2 ml ampoules as a solution that needs no preparation, 10 ampoules per pack. The solution is administered by healthcare professionals; in Japan the product is classified as a prescription medicine rather than a cosmetic.

The name Melsmon covers several closely related preparations of placental origin that have been used in Japan for several decades.

Composition and standardisation

Unlike an ordinary medicine, this is not one active molecule with a precisely defined target. Its action is attributed to a set of components: amino acids, short peptides, nucleotides and vitamin derivatives.

Among the amino acids present are glycine and proline, which are part of collagen, as well as lysine, leucine, valine and other essential amino acids. They serve as material for protein synthesis in tissues.

The composition of placental hydrolysates depends on the starting material and the manufacturing process. Reviews note that different makers obtain preparations with a differing profile of components, so results from one study cannot be transferred automatically to another product.

Approved uses

In Japanese labelling the medicine is listed above all for climacteric disorders and for insufficient milk production during lactation. In these directions it is used as a supportive measure under medical supervision.

Placental extracts are also studied in other fields: dermatology, fatigue and recovery programmes. Such work mostly belongs to scientific hypotheses and small studies rather than to approved indications.

The cosmetic use common in Asia is not a registered indication. The decision to use the medicine belongs to a physician, based on examination results.

What to keep in mind

Only a healthcare professional performs the administration. The course and the frequency of procedures are set by a physician; a reference page does not establish a treatment regimen.

The medicine is not used with hypersensitivity to placental preparations or their components, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in acute infectious or inflammatory states, or in oncological disease.

Redness, itching or mild soreness at the injection site are possible. Transient headache and malaise are sometimes noted.

Ampoules are kept in a cool place protected from light and are not used after the expiry date printed on the pack.
