What oral semaglutide is
Semaglutide reproduces the action of GLP-1, a hormone the body produces in response to a meal. Turning the substance into a tablet took years of work on keeping the peptide from breaking down in the stomach and getting it into the bloodstream.

Medullary thyroid carcinoma in the patient's history, and MEN 2 syndrome, rule the medicine out. A physician also assesses the risk of hypoglycaemia if the patient receives insulin or a sulfonylurea.
