What sitafloxacin tablets are
Sitafloxacin is an antibacterial substance of the fluoroquinolone class, developed and registered in Japan. There it is sold under the trade name Gracevit, and in this pack it comes as 50 mg tablets, 100 of them in a box. This is an oral form intended for systemic action: the substance is absorbed in the gut and distributed to the tissues.
The substance belongs to the later fluoroquinolones. Such molecules were created in response to the growing resistance of bacteria to ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and other members of the class.
It is made by Daiichi Sankyo, Japan.
How sitafloxacin differs from other fluoroquinolones
A dual target
Like other drugs of the class, it inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. What sets it apart is the balanced affinity for both targets. For resistance to emerge, both targets have to change at once, and such a coincidence is unlikely.
Action against anaerobes
Many fluoroquinolones work poorly against bacteria that live without oxygen. Sitafloxacin retains that activity, which makes it convenient in mixed infections.
Absorption
Taken by mouth, the substance is well absorbed and reaches therapeutic levels in the tissues of the airways, the kidneys and the ear, nose and throat. Food does not noticeably interfere with absorption.
Approved uses
The prescribing information lists infections of the respiratory tract, including community-acquired pneumonia and flare-ups of chronic bronchopulmonary disease, complicated urinary tract infections, bacterial conditions of the ear, nose, throat and mouth, and also urethritis in men and chlamydial cervicitis in women.
A separate place belongs to Buruli ulcer, a skin infection caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans.
Choosing the drug, the length of the course and the monitoring of tolerability are the physician's tasks. A reference page does not select treatment.
Presentation and pack
The pack holds 100 tablets of 50 mg. That volume is meant for a long course, and its duration is set by a physician. The tablet is swallowed whole with water.
An unfinished course of an antibacterial helps resistant bacteria spread, so treatment should not be stopped on one's own.

Precautions
- This is a prescription medicine. Prescribing, dosing and monitoring belong to a physician.
- Fluoroquinolones may affect tendons, heart rhythm and the nervous system. Any unusual symptom during treatment should be reported to a doctor.
- In older people and in patients receiving glucocorticosteroids the risk of tendon damage is higher.
- In reduced kidney or liver function the regimen is adjusted by a physician.
- Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is discussed with a doctor individually.
- Tell your doctor about every other medicine you take: interactions are possible.
Frequently asked
Are the sitafloxacin tablets a prescription medicine?
Yes. It is a prescription antibacterial and is not intended for self-medication.
Why does this page not give a dosing schedule?
The regimen depends on the type of infection, the patient's condition and kidney function. That is a physician's decision, not a reference page's.
How many tablets are in the pack?
The pack holds 100 tablets of 50 mg. That volume covers a long course, the length of which is set by a physician.
Where does the order ship from?
