What taltirelin is

Taltirelin is a synthetic substance from the group of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) analogues. TRH is a short peptide that takes part in the working of the central nervous system and in the regulation of the pituitary gland.

Natural TRH is broken down in the body very quickly, so its own action is short-lived. Taltirelin was designed as a stable analogue: the product information states that it persists in the body roughly eight times longer than the original hormone.

The medicine is supplied as 5 mg tablets, 28 tablets per pack. It is a prescription product used under the supervision of a neurologist.

How taltirelin acts

Binding to TRH receptors

Taltirelin binds to thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptors and activates the neurons that carry them on their surface. Such receptors are widely present in the brain and spinal cord and in the pituitary gland.

Release of neurotransmitters

Activation of the receptors increases the release of neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, dopamine and noradrenaline. These signalling molecules take part in passing impulses between nerve cells and in the coordination of movement.

Action on the cerebellum

In spinocerebellar degeneration the cerebellum and the pathways linked to it are affected. Acting on neurotransmitter systems is seen as a way to support the work of these structures, which is reflected in the stated indications.

Approved uses

The product information names ataxia in spinocerebellar degeneration, a condition in which the coordination of movements and gait is disturbed.

The daily dose stated by the manufacturer is 10 mg, that is two 5 mg tablets. The particular dose, the duration and the order of intake are nevertheless set by a physician; a reference page contains no prescriptions.
