What Tationil is

Tationil is a glutathione preparation in an injectable form. Glutathione itself is a short peptide built from three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. It is present in nearly every human cell and takes part in defence against oxidative stress and in the handling of foreign compounds.

In this product glutathione is supplied as the sodium salt. That form dissolves more readily, so the solution is prepared immediately before administration. The pack has two parts: the vials hold a lyophilised powder, and the ampoules contain water for injections, which serves as the solvent.

The product is made by the Italian company Teofarma S.r.l. The ready solution is given intramuscularly or intravenously, which places the preparation among medicines used in a medical setting or under a physician's supervision.

How glutathione works

The thiol group

The key part of the molecule is the thiol group of cysteine. It can donate electrons and bind reactive oxygen species, which are formed during metabolism and on exposure to toxic compounds.

Binding metabolites

Glutathione attaches to reactive breakdown products of medicines and other substances, converting them into a form the body can remove more easily. The process is called conjugation.

Cell protection

When the glutathione supply in a cell is adequate, the damaging effect of oxidants is reduced. In chemotherapy with platinum agents, the build-up of such products is considered one of the reasons nerves are affected.

Approved uses

According to the manufacturer's prescribing information the preparation is intended for adults, to prevent nerve damage (neuropathy) associated with treatment with cisplatin and its analogues. In pharmacological classification glutathione belongs to the antidote group: its role is to reduce the damaging effect of toxic products.

The decision to use it is made by the oncologist who manages the patient. This reference page does not give treatment schedules: the dose depends on the type of therapy, the patient's condition and test results, and it must not be chosen independently.

Study of glutathione in this role began back in the 1990s. Some of the work looks at how the substance affects tolerance of platinum-based chemotherapy, and the links are given below.
